MEDIA RELEASE 4 DECEMBER, 2017

Songwriters worldwide are invited to enter the 2018 Vanda & Young Songwriting Competition to go into the running for a first place cash prize of A$50,000, courtesy of Australasian performing rights organisation APRA AMCOS, legendary music company Alberts and the Australian arm of BMG.

Two runners-up cash prizes are also on offer with second place receiving A$10,000 thanks to AMPAL (Australasian Music Publishers Association) and third place taking home A$5,000 courtesy of media sponsor, Seventh Street Media. An exciting addition to the prize slate this year is A$5,000 for the best ‘unpublished’ work.

The Australian-based competition is named after iconic songwriters Harry Vanda and the late George Young, responsible for The Easybeats’ classic Friday On My Mind, John Paul Young’s Love is in the Air and a slew of hits, and is open to songwriters from all genres at any stage in their career. Judges include Daniel Johns of Silverchair, The Bamboos’ Lance Ferguson, and media and industry reps from triple j, Billboard, Universal Music, Sony Music and more.

The competition gave important boosts to songwriters early in their career including Kimbra, The Preatures, Gotye, Meg Mag, and Gretta Ray.

In 2016, Californian hip-hop artist Tia P was named the competition’s first international prize-winner with A$5000 third-place honour for her song 4 Seats From Beyoncé.

As the world’s largest charitable songwriting competition, the full A$50 entry fee goes to fund the transformative work of music therapy non-profit organisation Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Australia.

Brett Cottle, Chief Executive APRA AMCOS said:
“We’re inviting songwriters from across the globe to enter their work in this year’s Vanda & Young Songwriting Competition. The calibre of entries is impressive, and each song makes a difference to the music therapy work of Nordoff-Robbins.”

David Albert, Managing Director of Alberts said:

“Alberts is thrilled to continue its long-term association with APRA AMCOS and also partner for the first time with BMG for the 2018 Vanda & Young Songwriting Competition. This competition recognises the significance Harry Vanda and the late George Young have to the music community through their legendary songwriting partnership, and provides a great opportunity to support Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Australia.”

Heath Johns, Managing Director of BMG Australia said:

“BMG is very proud to partner with our friends at Alberts and APRA AMCOS for the 2018 Vanda & Young Songwriting Competition. The competition provides a unique platform for songwriters to have their music heard and also contribute to an important cause. The prize money on offer should also make a meaningful difference to the eventual winner’s career and we are very happy to get behind that.”

Entries close 11.59pm (AEDT) / 7:59AM (ET) 17 January 2018.
