Know Your Right

The exploitation of copyright in digital media continues to grow in line with technological developments. Digital disruption that occurs in the world also affects lifestyle changes. Video service media such as YouTube is one example of media that makes conventional TV abandoned by viewers, especially young people and millennials. With the development of YouTube and becoming a source of income, every person or business entity endeavors and competes to make content or channels so that they can be seen / watched in public and generate money. Of the uploaded content, there are many who use copyrighted songs / music. YouTube’s main revenue source is still dominated by ad placement on content or channels.

WAMI, as the Collective Management Organization of songwriters and music publishers, has collaborated with YouTube regarding copyright protection on content on YouTube. Therefore WAMI in collaboration with YouTube made a Seminar for WAMI members specifically explaining about YouTube related to copyright. This is a program from the membership section to provide education and socialization to members.

The seminar was conducted in 3 cities, namely Jakarta (3 July 2017), Bandung (10 July 2017) and Surabaya (25 July 2017). The YouTube team was represented by Muara Sipahutar (Music Partnership Manager, Indonesia), David Sheils (APAC’s Head of Music Publishing) and Deo Nathaniel. While from WAMI was represented by Meidi Ferialdi and representatives from the Indonesian Music Publishers Association (APMINDO) by Irfan Aulia and PAMPI representatives by Edy Haryatno.

WAMI will do the same thing next year for other cities in Indonesia.
